Nettie Locke Rogers
The Horse
I create sculptural and functional narrative works that are inspired by animals that have had a significant impact on my life. The work draws from a darkness that at times surrounded my childhood. Through sculpture I create an invented world that allows me to reflect, resolve and cope with real world events and memories. The main character in my work is the horse, an archetype; who became my guide. My animal forms are also tools for exploring my own internal world/ psychology and memories and events in the past. The intensity of my figures stems from my own intensity and is derived from a childhood that was unusual. The part horse part human figure symbolizes the strong bond I have with the horse. They can be viewed as self-portraits since they clearly have a huge influence on my life. When I make these specific pieces I feel as if I am subconsciously communicating with myself in a way that brings me happiness
