This Ceramic Black and White Horse Sgraffito was handmade, created from white earthenware.
 
I wanted to create a wall piece that symbolized a dear horse I loved & lost and a horse that knew him. She is currently helping my heart heal.

Process:
This piece was created from two slabs of clay which were assembled and made into a cylinder. It was rotated around while evenly being pushed from the inside out creating its final form. A layer of underglaze was applied by brush. Then a ribbon tool was used to scrape away layers of the underglaze allowing the white claybody to show. This was the beginning to the design process.
 
This piece went through many changes over the course of two days until the design felt right.
When dry, the piece is bisque fired to its maturing temperature, cone 04. The white areas are then sanded down for a very smooth finish. An application of clear transparent glaze is applied following the final firing.
 
This claybody has some resemblance to that of porcelain.
